Combining baking with beautiful bicycles,  Kate Macmillan’s Bicycle Kitchen has been turning heads at celebrations, weddings and events this year.

“While we were living in France we fell in love with these beautiful bicycle businesses selling baked goods, gelato and cold drinks. We thought it was a fantastic idea, and decided to take the concept back home to New Zealand,” says Kate.

Drawing on Kate’s experience in event management and her lifelong passion for baking (Kate’s a skilled self-taught baker) the idea for the Bicycle Kitchen was born.  After the family settled in Greytown two years ago,  Kate converted the old stables on the family’s property into a pristine commercial kitchen. Here she makes the delectable doughnuts, cinnamon scrolls and rustic celebration cakes she is becoming well-known for around the Wairarapa.

The ‘bicycle’ half of Kate’s business is provided by the handsome vintage-style Pashley deli bikes. Stylish yet practical, they are a natural fit for weddings and celebrations, Kate says.

“They look beautiful when they are set up with umbrellas and bunting. And they are great at weddings for serving gelato or bubbles to guests after the ceremony, to entertain guests during bridal photographs, or to provide dessert at the reception.  I’ve seen brides and grooms use them as a fun prop for photos.”

The bicycles are naturally very portable. “They can park anywhere  –  the beach, a paddock or a garden where you couldn’t take a food truck or caravan. They can fit in very small places. There’s no need for power cords as the fridge/freezer is powered by a reliable battery.”

Stocked with Kate’s mini doughnut gelato sandwiches, gelato with doughnut holes, cones or tubs, or set up with a spectacular doughnut tower the Bicycle Kitchen is likely to be a talking point at any wedding or party.
